We at Tarrant Plastic Surgery understand that the final appearance of your
scar is an important consideration when choosing surgery. We are committed
to you having the best scars. Besides the meticulous technique that we
will use during surgery, the attempts to place the scars in well hidden
places and in locations that can be hidden by clothes we are big believers
of using scar management products to minimize scars post-operatively.
Though there is no one right approach to scar management, we have developed
an approach that has had consistent results in pleasing our patients.
First, immediately after surgery you will find that myself and my staff are
who are doing your dressing changes.
Secondly, we will discourage you from using any other scar management
protocol besides the ones that we're going to educate you about. Thirdly,
most incisions are closed with glue and have supporting tapes called Steri-
strips which help flatten that scar. By the end of the second going into
the third week, more aggressive attempts to minimize scar are required.
Remember scar is the over expression of normal healing, and thus some
normal healing to give the wound its strength is required.
Products like Scarguard which can be purchased here in our office have
active ingredients like Vitamin E, silicone, and steroids. They are in a
preparation which is easy to use and has high patient compliance and low
side effects. After this product has been started, more advanced scar
therapies like Embrace can be started to take the tension off wounds and
make the scar seem the smallest as possible.
Maximizing the result with the best scar is an ongoing process. We at
Tarrant Plastic Surgery are committed to seeing you regularly and often to
ensure that you can have the best scar possible.
