Dr. Vishnu Rumalla and his team feel that numbers can tell a story. With that in mind, let’s consider some statistics on liposuction and what they reveal about this popular surgical procedure.
Liposuction Statistics for 2017
According to numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were 246,354 liposuctions performed in the United States in 2017. It was the second most popular cosmetic surgery procedure last year behind breast augmentation (300,378) and nose reshaping/rhinoplasty (218,924).
How Do These Numbers Compare to Previous Years?
According to the ASPS, there were 235,237 liposuctions performed in America in 2016. This means that in 2017, there were 5 percent more liposuctions performed. Liposuction maintained its position as the second most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States in 2016.
Liposuction and Gender
Liposuction was much more popular among women than among men according to the ASPS. In 2017, there were 218,174 liposuction procedures performed on women, comprising 89 percent of all procedures. The only procedure more popular than liposuction among women was breast augmentation.
There were just 28,180 liposuctions performed on men in 2017; among men, liposuction was the third most popular surgery behind nose reshaping (52,393) and cosmetic eyelid surgery (32,281).
Regional Popularity of Liposuction
By region of the country, liposuction maintains steady popularity. The ASPS recorded the following numbers by region:
- 43,335 liposuctions performed in the northeast, comprising 18 percent of all surgeries in the region
- 32,345 liposuctions performed in the midwest, comprising 13 percent of all surgeries in the region
- 55,559 liposuctions performed in the southeast, comprising 23 percent of all surgeries in the region
- 37,807 liposuctions performed in the south, comprising 15 percent of all surgeries in the region
- 77,308 liposuctions performed in the west, including Alaska and Hawaii, comprising 31 percent of all surgeries in the region
How Much Fat Can Be Safely Removed During Surgery?
Liposuction is intended for cosmetic fat reduction rather than weight loss. As a result, only a limited amount of fat can be removed in a single go. In general, only 6 to 8 pounds is removed during a liposuction procedure. This is enough for cosmetic enhancement without a significant impact on weight or wellness.
What Is the Patient Satisfaction Rate of Liposuction?
According to a 2012 study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the ASPS, liposuction rated an 8 out of 10 in overall patient satisfaction. When patients underwent a combination of tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) and liposuction, the satisfaction rating exceeded 99 percent.
Following body contouring surgery, 86 percent of patients reported improved self-esteem, and 70 percent noted an improved quality of life.
