The areola is the dark circle of skin that surrounds the nipple. The areolar breast augmentation incision technique involves making an incision along the lower half of the areola. This is a particularly discreet technique because the resulting scar tends to blend in with the natural border that separates the darker skin of the areola from the lighter skin of the breast.

Another benefit of this technique is that it allows Dr. Rumalla greater control over the placement of the breast implant due to the proximity of the incision to the breast itself. While the transaxillary (or underarm) incision technique involves no scarring of the actual breast tissue, its distance from the breast can pose a bit of a challenge in terms of the placement of the implant.
