Dermal FIller Injections

Most of us become concerned as we begin to notice common signs of aging becoming visible on the face. Some patients may begin to notice wrinkles while others may notice loose skin that begins to sag as elasticity is lost. While most people would like to address these signs of aging, not all are willing to undergo surgery. Still others may not feel their symptoms are severe enough to warrant surgical intervention. At Dr. Vishnu Rumalla’s Fort Worth plastic surgery practice, we offer many cosmetic procedures that can give patients a more youthful appearance without cosmetic surgery. Dermal fillers are a cosmetic injectable that are commonly used to address wrinkles, loose skin, and other signs of aging on the face. Two dermal fillers available to Dr. Rumalla’s Fort Worth patients are Juvéderm® and Restylane®. While Dr. Rumalla can answer any questions a patient may have regarding these dermal fillers to help them determine the most appropriate treatment option for their unique situation, patients can read a brief overview of the two products below.

Juvéderm®

Juvéderm® is a dermal filler that contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is present in the deeper layers of the skin. The role of hyaluronic acid is to help the skin absorb moisture. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin begins to decrease. Juvéderm® is a smooth gel that can be injected into the skin to act as a replacement for lost hyaluronic acid. When Juvéderm® is injected by Dr. Rumalla, patients notice an immediate improvement to the skin. Juvéderm® fills in depressions and lines to smooth moderate to severe wrinkles and fill loose folds of skin. The most common area of the face to be treated with Juvéderm® is the skin around the mouth. Juvéderm® can reduce the appearance of smile lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth, marionette lines or folds that form around the corners of the mouth, and vertical lines that form above the upper lip. The side effects of Juvéderm® are minor, with the most common symptoms being redness, bumps, or swelling at the injection site. These side effects usually last for less than seven days. One of the benefits of Juvéderm® is that patients can get results that last up to a year with just one treatment.

Restylane®

Restylane® is very similar to Juvéderm®. It, too, is a dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid. Restylane® is commonly used to plump and smooth the skin to smooth wrinkles around the mouth and fill in loose pockets of skin. Restylane® may result in swelling or redness at the treatment site that typically lasts for up to seven days. Patients report that the results of Restylane® can last for 12 to 18 months. Restylane® is also FDA approved to add volume to the lips. Restylane® can be injected directly into the lips to give patients the plump, pouty lips they desire.
