Breast Implant Revision Surgery
At Dr. Vishnu Rumalla’s practice in Fort Worth, breast augmentation surgery is performed on a regular basis. This is a common procedure that is performed in order to leave women more satisfied with the size, shape, and overall appearance of their bust line. The majority of patients are extremely satisfied with the results of breast augmentation surgery. Occasionally, patients will come to Fort Worth plastic surgeon Vishnu Rumalla with concerns regarding the results of breast augmentation. Patients may be dissatisfied with the appearance of the breasts following surgery or they may have experienced complications as a result of surgery. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Rumalla can offer his Fort Worth patients various breast implant revision techniques to address these issues and give them the breasts they desire.
Implant Exchange
The most simple and common breast implant revision surgery that is performed is an implant exchange. An implant exchange surgery will be very similar to the initial breast augmentation surgery. During an implant exchange, Dr. Rumalla will remove the current breast implant and replace it with one that is either larger in size, filled with a different substance, or textured differently. This procedure is most often performed when a patient is dissatisfied with the size or feel of their current breast implant.
An implant will also need to be replaced if it has ruptured. If a saline implant leaks or ruptures, it will simply be replaced. If a silicone implant ruptures, the surrounding area will need to be thoroughly cleaned out first to remove saline from the breast before the implant can be replaced.
Pocket Change
Many problems that arise from breast augmentation can be corrected by changing the placement of the breast implant, also known as a pocket change. This procedure commonly involves moving the breast implant from above the chest muscle to below it. By making this pocket change, patients often find that the breasts look and feel more natural. Pocket change can also be performed to eliminate the problem of “rippling,” a condition in which the breast implant can be seen or felt beneath the surface of the skin.
Capsulectomy
This procedure is performed to correct severe cases of capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is a condition in which scar tissue forms around the breast implant and leaves the breast feeling unnaturally hard, and sometimes painful. During a capsulectomy, Dr. Rumalla removes the implant and the surrounding scar tissue. Often times, Dr. Rumalla will also perform a pocket change once the infected implant has been removed. An implant that is placed below the chest muscle is less likely to suffer from capsular contracture.
Additional Breast Implant Revision Surgeries
In addition to these common breast implant revision techniques, Dr. Rumalla can personalize breast revision surgery to address the following complications:
- Implants that have “bottomed out” or those that sit too high
- Breasts that are asymmetrical
- Breast that are spaced too far apart or too close together
